TOLEDO, Ohio — A 17-year-old student is in critical condition after being shot multiple times Monday afternoon at Glass City Academy in Toledo.
Police say the shooting happened just after 3 p.m. near the school’s front entrance as classes were being dismissed.
Superintendent Stewart Jesse said investigators believe another student fired the shots, though no arrests have been made. Police have not identified any suspects, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Classes are expected to resume Tuesday with added safety measures in place, including armed security personnel.
“We take safety and security very seriously here,” Jesse said. “We’re going to make sure our staff and students stay safe despite this incident.”
Several students reported hearing multiple gunshots as they were leaving the building.
“I was in the bathroom, and it was just five shots,” one student told WTOL. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, they’re shooting,’ and I wasn’t going out there.”
Toledo City Council President Vanice Williams, who represents the district where the school is located, declined to comment through her chief of staff, citing the age of those involved.
Glass City Academy is a dropout recovery school serving students ages 14 to 22 working toward their high school diplomas, according to Jesse.
