Surge in Renaming Requests
The complaints, submitted as of late last week, focus on facilities like the Wexner Medical Center and Wexner Football Complex. Protesters, including nurses from the Ohio Nurses Association, rallied outside the new University Hospital tower on Feb. 22, chanting against Wexner’s association with Epstein, the convicted sex offender. OSU officials confirmed an established review process for such requests, with the Board of Trustees holding final authority, though no decisions have been announced.
Protests and Union Demands
ONA President Rick Lucas led calls for removal, citing ethical obligations as mandated reporters and Wexner’s proximity to Epstein’s crimes. Sexual abuse survivor Steve Snyder-Hill, who sued OSU over former team doctor Richard Strauss, joined the effort, arguing the university must prioritize survivors over donors. A prior attempt to rename the football complex was denied, despite Wexner’s $200 million in donations over decades.
University Response
OSU Wexner Medical Center spokesperson Marti Leitch emphasized respect for public discourse while focusing on patient care during the new tower’s opening. University leaders noted pending requests under their naming policy, with about 295 submissions reported as of Feb. 18. Trustees Chair John Zeiger, whose firm represents Wexner, faces additional calls to resign. Demonstrators vowed continued action if no commitments are made.
