COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Blue Jackets have officially named veteran coach Rick Bowness as their new head coach, the team announced Tuesday evening. Bowness, 70, takes over for Dean Evason, who was dismissed earlier this week after the team’s disappointing start to the season — making him the first NHL coach to be fired this year.

Bowness’s hiring marks his return to the bench after a brief retirement following his departure from the Winnipeg Jets in 2024. Known for his steady presence and decades-long experience behind the bench, Bowness said Tuesday he feels “healthy and rested” and ready to lead a young Columbus team hungry to return to playoff contention.

“I’m excited to be here and eager to get to work,” Bowness said in his introductory press conference. “This is a group with a lot of potential, and my job is to help them believe in themselves and play the right way every night.”

Bowness brings more than 40 years of NHL coaching experience, having served in various roles for franchises including the Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, and New York Islanders. He led Dallas to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020 and is widely regarded for his ability to develop defensive structure and foster accountability within young rosters.

For Columbus, the hiring signals a renewed emphasis on experience and stability after a turbulent few seasons marked by coaching changes and inconsistency. The Blue Jackets have not reached the postseason since 2020 and currently sit near the bottom of the Metropolitan Division.

General Manager Don Waddell praised Bowness’s leadership and long-term perspective. “Rick has a remarkable track record of connecting with players and creating competitive teams,” Waddell said. “We believe his vision and discipline are exactly what this group needs.”

Bowness is expected to make his debut behind the bench later this week, as the Blue Jackets prepare for a home stand that includes matchups against the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs.
