Drivers hitting Ohio’s roads this holiday season can expect to see more flashing lights in their rearview mirrors — not from decorations, but from increased law enforcement activity. The Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) announced today that it has expanded funding for additional patrols aimed at curbing impaired driving, particularly as marijuana-related incidents climb statewide.

According to OTSO officials, local police, sheriff’s departments, and state troopers will be out in greater numbers through the holiday period, focusing on detecting drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce crashes and fatalities during a time when traffic volumes and celebrations both reach their peak.

“We’ve seen a noticeable rise in marijuana-impaired driving stops this season,” said an OTSO spokesperson. “While recreation and celebration are an important part of the holidays, safety behind the wheel must remain a priority. Impaired driving — by any substance — puts everyone at risk.”

Data from earlier in the year show impairment linked to marijuana use has been an increasing factor in traffic enforcement encounters, coinciding with evolving public attitudes and availability of cannabis products. Officials say many drivers underestimate the effects THC can have on reaction times, judgment, and awareness.

State troopers emphasize that Ohio law treats drugged driving with the same seriousness as drunk driving. Those caught impaired face steep fines, license suspension, and potential jail time.

The OTSO’s stepped-up enforcement will continue through New Year’s Day. Agencies are urging motorists to plan ahead by designating sober drivers, using rideshare services, or staying overnight after holiday gatherings.

“Enjoy the season, but don’t make a choice that could change lives forever,” the OTSO reminded in a statement.
