A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred earlier this week in Columbus’s University District, a neighborhood that borders The Ohio State University campus.

Columbus police identified the suspect as Joseph Gerich. He is accused of fatally stabbing 21-year-old Robert Russell during an altercation late Tuesday night. Officers were dispatched to the scene near East 14th Avenue and North High Street shortly after 11 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls about a fight.

When officers arrived, they found Russell suffering from a stab wound. Medics transported him to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The Franklin County Coroner’s Office will release the official cause of death following an autopsy.

Following an overnight investigation, detectives located Gerich and took him into custody without incident early Wednesday morning. He has been charged with one count of murder and is being held in the Franklin County Jail. Police have not disclosed a possible motive but said preliminary evidence suggests the two men may have known each other.

Columbus Division of Police Homicide Unit detectives are continuing to gather witness statements and review surveillance footage from nearby businesses and residences. Authorities urged anyone with additional information to contact the Homicide Unit or submit anonymous tips through Central Ohio Crime Stoppers.

The University District, home to a high concentration of students, has been the focus of increased safety efforts in recent months following several violent incidents. Area residents expressed concern over the latest tragedy, saying they hope it prompts additional measures to improve neighborhood safety.
