LEWIS CENTER, Ohio — Several hundred residents in Delaware County, near the Lewis Center area, were evacuated from their homes Wednesday evening after a natural gas leak was reported, prompting a significant emergency response.

Firefighters and utility crews rushed to the scene on the 9000 block of Emerald Hill Drive, east of U.S. Route 23, shortly before 6 p.m. after receiving a call about the gas leak. Arriving crews immediately detected the smell of gas and began a door-to-door evacuation of nearby homes as a precaution.

According to Battalion Chief Jeffrey Geitter of the Columbus Division of Fire, the leak was caused by a tree falling on a regulator station. This damage reportedly led to the over-pressurization of the natural gas supply system in the area. The pressure caused relief valves on residential gas meters to activate, which, while indicating the system was working as designed to prevent a rupture, released gas into the atmosphere and prompted the mass alert.

* Gas Shut Off: Suburban Natural Gas Company, which services the area, shut off gas to approximately 30 to 40 houses to isolate the leak and allow workers to inspect the damage.

* Residential Warning: Residents returning home after the evacuation were advised by the fire department not to turn on light switches, use open flames, or ignite anything flammable until their gas service was safely restored. Those whose gas was shut off overnight were directed to contact Suburban Gas.

The swift action of emergency crews in responding to the elevated pressure levels and strong gas odors ensured the safety of the community. The incident remains under investigation as utility workers continue to restore service and assess the full extent of the damage to the regulator station.
