The collaboration, announced from AEP’s headquarters in Columbus, Ohio, includes two key agreements that aim to improve the delivery of high-voltage transmission projects and expand domestic manufacturing for critical grid components, addressing the rapidly growing energy demands of sectors like the data center market.
Collaboration on High-Voltage Transmission
The first component is a Cooperation and Commitment Agreement focused on the design, engineering, procurement, and construction of 765 kV and other high-voltage transmission facilities.
AEP, which pioneered and remains the largest operator of the 765 kV system in the United States, will combine its deep operational expertise with Quanta’s proven track record as the most experienced 765 kV constructor. This partnership is expected to:
* Improve Cost Predictability: Streamlining project execution and cost management.
* Enhance Delivery Certainty: Ensuring timely completion of major grid upgrades.
* Expand the 765 kV footprint: Leveraging the partnership to bring the benefits of extra-high-voltage transmission to AEP’s traditional operating areas and surrounding markets.
Investing in Domestic Manufacturing
The second and equally critical agreement is a Development Services Agreement to significantly expand domestic manufacturing capacity for extra-high-voltage (EHV) transformers and circuit breakers.
This initiative represents a substantial investment in power equipment manufacturing within the United States. Its primary goal is to strengthen the domestic supply chain and ensure reliable access to the critical components needed to modernize and expand the electric grid. The move is a direct response to global supply chain vulnerabilities and the increasing demand for large power infrastructure equipment.
“These strategic agreements with Quanta Services are foundational to our $72 billion capital plan,” said an AEP spokesperson. “By securing greater efficiency in our transmission delivery and expanding the domestic manufacturing base for critical components, we are positioning AEP to reliably serve our customers, including the booming data center market, well into the future.”
The partnership is expected to leverage the combined strengths of both companies to deliver greater efficiency and certainty in meeting the future energy needs of customers.
