The Toledo Rockets take the Mid-American Conference’s most productive offense on the road Saturday, facing the league’s only unbeaten team in conference play when they meet Eastern Michigan at 3:30 p.m. at Rynearson Stadium in Ypsilanti. The game, Eastern Michigan’s Homecoming, will be streamed on ESPN+.
Toledo (4-2, 1-1 MAC) had its four-game winning streak snapped last week in a 23-8 home loss to Buffalo, its lowest-scoring game of the season. Eastern Michigan (4-3, 3-0 MAC) has won three straight, most recently escaping Akron 25-23 on a late 48-yard field goal, and a win Saturday would strengthen the Eagles’ claim as a dark-horse contender for the MAC Championship Game.
The Rockets’ case starts with quarterback John Alan Richter, the MAC’s leading passer with 13 touchdowns against just one interception. Toledo leads the conference in scoring at 36.7 points per game, total offense at 455.5 yards per game and passing offense at 271.0 yards per game, and receiver Adjatay Dabbs leads a deep group with 27 catches for 402 yards and four touchdowns.
The ground game gives Toledo balance. In its last road game, at Ball State, the Rockets produced two 100-yard rushers — CJ Miller with 196 yards and Connor Walendzak with 103 — and the team ranks among the national leaders in gains of 50 yards or more. Pass protection has been a telling statistic as well: Toledo is 4-0 in games in which Richter was not sacked, and 0-2 when he was.
Eastern Michigan counters with experience. Seventh-year senior quarterback Noah Kim ranks second in the MAC in passing behind Richter and, during the Eagles’ three-game winning streak, has topped 200 yards in each game with five total touchdowns and one interception. Receivers Benson Prosper and Harold Mack have combined for 55 catches and about 600 yards, and tight end Joshua Long was instrumental in the win at Akron.
Discipline may decide it. Toledo was flagged 15 times for 137 penalty yards against Buffalo, and its defense — led by pass rusher Andrew Zock, with 5.0 sacks and two fumble recoveries, and linebacker Isaac Zay, with 45 tackles and two interceptions — has intercepted just three passes all season. Eastern Michigan’s defense, the worst in the FBS against the run last season, has improved sharply and has held all three MAC opponents below 24 points.
Toledo leads the all-time series 39-13 and won the last meeting 29-28 on Nov. 2, 2024, yet the Rockets are only a 5.5- to 6.5-point favorite on the road, where they have struggled in recent seasons. The winner Saturday emerges as a MAC championship contender; the loser will have ground to make up in the second half of the conference schedule.
