BOWLING GREEN — The Battle of I-75 in women’s soccer produced 45 seconds of chaos and then a stalemate on Thursday night, Oct. 15, as Bowling Green and Toledo finished in a 1-1 Mid-American Conference draw at Cochrane Stadium.

Bowling Green senior Emme Butera broke a scoreless match in the second half with a spectacular free-kick goal, sending the home crowd into celebration. The lead barely had time to register. Just 45 seconds later, Toledo’s Morgan Spitler pounced on a defensive giveaway and scored unassisted at the 68:01 mark to pull the Rockets level.

The statistics told the story of a home team that controlled play but could not finish the job. Bowling Green outshot Toledo 24-7 overall, including 16-5 in the second half, held a 10-4 edge in shots on goal, and took seven corner kicks to the Rockets’ two.

Toledo’s resistance started in goal. Paige Dornheggen made a career-high nine saves for the Rockets, five of them after halftime, while Bowling Green keeper Payton O’Malley stopped three shots at the other end.

The Falcons had set the tone early, building an 8-2 shot advantage in a scoreless first half that featured four Dornheggen saves. One of the half’s best chances came late, when Jayna Searles sent a diagonal ball to the far post and Gabby Lamparty headed it on goal, only for the Toledo keeper to grab it.

Toledo nearly struck first after the break. Early in the second half, a long-range shot from Gabby Anulare crashed off the top corner where the post meets the crossbar and bounced away, inches from giving the visitors the lead before Butera’s free kick finally opened the scoring.

After Spitler’s equalizer, Bowling Green pressed hard for a winner. The Falcons outshot Toledo 7-2 over the final 21-plus minutes and generated six shots, three on goal, and four corners in the last 10 minutes alone, while the Rockets did not manage a single shot or corner down the stretch. Toledo’s defense bent but held.

The draw leaves Bowling Green at 6-2-5 overall and 2-1-4 in the MAC, with Toledo at 5-4-5 and 1-2-4. The point keeps the Rockets within three points of the Falcons in the chase for the final MAC Tournament position, extends Toledo’s unbeaten run on the road to six straight results, and sends the Rockets on to face Ball State next.
