Senator Smith, who represents the 21st Senate District, is a prominent Democrat in the northeastern Ohio region and a key member of the party’s leadership in the General Assembly. His endorsement highlights Dr. Acton’s appeal to established party figures.
In announcing his support, Senator Smith focused on the critical issue of public confidence. “The Ohio Governor’s race is about trust,” said Senator Smith. “With people’s expenses rising and self-serving DC and Columbus politicians looking out for their interests, Ohioans are looking for someone who will make things better, not worse. I know Dr. Amy Acton will look out for us because we all have already seen her do that.”
Smith went on to state, “I trust Amy Acton and Ohioans can trust her too. She has my support to be Ohio’s next Governor.”
Dr. Acton, the former Director of the Ohio Department of Health, is running in the 2026 gubernatorial race. She became a widely recognized figure in Ohio for her public service during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The endorsement from Senator Smith solidifies Acton’s support among the Senate Democratic Caucus leadership, which now includes all four of its members: Minority Leader Nickie Antonio, Assistant Minority Leader Hearcel Craig, Minority Whip Kent Smith, and Assistant Minority Whip Beth Liston. Dr. Acton’s campaign confirmed she has now been endorsed by six of Ohio’s nine Democratic senators.
“I’m so proud to have Senator Smith’s support, and the support of the entire leadership team of the Senate Democratic Caucus,” said Dr. Acton. “They are dedicated leaders to all citizens of Ohio… I’m grateful for their trust in my vision for a stronger Ohio, and look forward to working alongside them as governor.”
The endorsement is a key development as Dr. Acton works to consolidate support ahead of the Democratic primary for the 2026 general election, in which the seat is open as the incumbent Republican governor is term-limited.
