COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State University President Ted Carter abruptly resigned Monday after university officials said he engaged in what they described as an “inappropriate relationship” with a university staff member, ending a tenure that lasted less than two years.
In a statement released late Monday morning, the university’s Board of Trustees said Carter submitted his resignation effective immediately following an internal review into his conduct. The statement said the board “became aware of conduct inconsistent with the university’s values and expectations for its leadership.”
“The Board of Trustees has accepted President Carter’s resignation, effective immediately,” board chair Hiroyuki Fujita said in the statement. “While this is a difficult moment for the Ohio State community, the board remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the continued mission of excellence across our campuses.”
Carter, a former University of Nebraska System president and retired Navy vice admiral, was selected to lead Ohio State in early 2024, succeeding Kristina M. Johnson. His appointment was widely praised at the time for his leadership experience and steady hand during a period of nationwide challenges in higher education.
University officials did not identify the staff member involved or specify the nature of the relationship, citing privacy concerns. The board said an acting president will be appointed while a nationwide search for Carter’s successor begins.
In a brief personal statement shared through the university, Carter acknowledged “a lapse in judgment” and apologized to the campus community. “It has been the honor of my life to serve Ohio State,” he said. “I regret that my actions have caused pain for those I care about and serve.”
The resignation comes amid ongoing scrutiny of university leadership and workplace conduct across higher education. Ohio State said additional information about interim leadership and the presidential search process will be announced in the coming days.
