MARION, Ohio – Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan has formally asked the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to investigate ongoing water quality problems in Marion, Ohio, amid months of resident complaints. Residents report a strong chlorine smell, bad taste, and discoloration in their tap water, issues first noted in mid-December 2025.

Background on Complaints

The problems resurfaced multiple times, including alerts in early February 2026, prompting community frustration. Resident Stefanie Scott told reporters she refuses to drink, bathe in, or let pets or grandchildren use the water despite safety claims. Grogan emphasized the need for on-the-ground investigators, stating residents deserve more than company assurances.

Aqua Ohio’s Response

Aqua Ohio, the local water provider, maintains the water meets state and federal standards and poses no health risk. The company attributes taste and odor issues to geosmin, a naturally occurring compound, and has adjusted treatment processes while flushing hydrants in affected areas. No boil advisory has been issued.

EPA Involvement

The Ohio EPA confirmed collaboration with Aqua Ohio and noted additional samples are under review to verify compliance. A spokesperson highlighted no signs of contamination in city sources, but the agency is analyzing further tests out of caution. Grogan criticized reliance on statements alone, calling the situation serious and unresolved.
