The footage, recorded by a private security system, shows a person wearing a dark hoodie and light-colored pants walking through an alley behind East Ninth Avenue shortly after midnight on Dec. 14. Investigators say the individual’s movements and location place them near the home where 37-year-old Marcus Johnson and 35-year-old Danielle Ruiz were later found dead.
Columbus Division of Police homicide detectives confirmed Tuesday that no arrests have been made, but they are continuing to pursue several leads. The couple’s bodies were discovered by a neighbor after they failed to respond to phone calls. Preliminary autopsy results indicate both died from gunshot wounds.
“Our detectives are working tirelessly to bring justice to the victims and closure to their families,” Sgt. Charles Watts said during a press briefing. “We’re asking anyone who recognizes this person or has information about their whereabouts to contact us immediately.”
The release of the video marks a significant development in a case that has shaken the Weinland Park community, a neighborhood that has undergone rapid redevelopment but continues to struggle with sporadic violent crime. Residents have organized safety meetings and established a neighborhood watch group in the wake of the double homicide.
Police are urging anyone with information to contact the homicide unit at 614-645-4730 or submit an anonymous tip through Central Ohio Crime Stoppers.
