MADISON, Ohio — Residents in Madison experienced a brief jolt late Monday night when a minor earthquake struck Lake County. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake registered a magnitude of 2.6 and was centered just off Bates Road, south of Middle Ridge Road.

The tremor occurred shortly before midnight and was felt across parts of Madison Township and neighboring communities. While the shaking startled some residents, local officials reported no major damage or injuries.

“I thought a truck hit the side of the house,” said Laura Jennings, who lives near the epicenter. “It was quick but enough to wake us up.”

Small earthquakes are not unheard of in Northeast Ohio, though they remain relatively rare. Seismologists say that quakes of this magnitude typically do not cause structural damage but can be felt by people near the epicenter.

Emergency crews remained on alert overnight but reported no service disruptions. The USGS continues to monitor the area for any potential aftershocks.

Residents can report their experiences and track seismic activity on the USGS “Did You Feel It?” website, which helps experts gather data about local tremors.
